There may be a time during treatment that you look in the mirror and dont recognise the person looking back at you.
Whether you experience weight gain, hair loss,or scarring, your body may begin to look and feel like a foreign object to you.You will probably feel uncomfortable about your appearance and about being thought of as "different."
The good news is your body and your feelings about your body image will change daily. It will probably take time to adjust to these changes. But remember underneath all of the changes, you are still you.If you find you are struggling with maintaining your self-esteem,you may want to focus on other sources of self-esteem.For example, rather than focusing on your body, you may want to take pride in your positive outlook or the amount of love and support from your family and friends that surrounds you.It may be helpful to know that over time most young cancer patients learn to love themselves and their bodies, the same way they did pre cancer.
Once you have experimented with your new look and you start to feel more comfortable with your self-image you will probably feel confident to explore the rest of the world.Dealing with people outside of your family and friends can be interesting. The majority of people will be touched by your strength and inspired by your courage to live and share your experience with others. However other people, mostly strangers, may stare and at times make inappropriate comments of sympathy, judgment and if you can believe it even ridicule!Others that know of you may find it hard to separate you as a person from you as a cancer sufferer.
This kind of behaviour is usually due to a lack of empathy and understanding of cancer and your unique experience. How you decide to deal with others is your personal choice and may depend a great deal on how you are feeling at the time.

Do you stand out from the crowd by looking different?Does this stress you?Blame it on evolution.I just read yet another posting on the "tall quotes" page of tallwomen.org,and once again,am inspired to write an article. The poster is a 15-year-old girl who stands 5-10 and says she's self-conscious because all her friends are "only about five feet." I thought, why should YOU feel self-conscious?Ever thought that THEY feel self-conscious because they have to strain their neck to talk to you?Why does looking different from a group of people cause so much distress in so many teens, young adults and 30-somethings?Even the over-40 crowd cringes at the prospect of looking different, whether it's an uncontrollable physical trait like height,or feeling they overdressed for a casual event.
Looking different isn't just about having big purple hairy splotches all over one's face.Or an adult being 3 feet tall or weighing 500 pounds.Looking different can mean merely being taller than all one's friends.Or having frizzy hair.Or big ears.Or very skinny legs.Or a skinny body. These are relatively minor things, yet can ravage a person's soul.In fact, sometimes, the body part that's "different" isn't always,in and of itself, abnormal.
Now,big ears that stick out, yes, those do look odd.But that 5-10 teenaged girl -- I'm sure she'd look quite average in a photo standing next to her father, who might be 6-3.Her "looking different" only becomes apparent when she's around her five-foot-zero friends.
So what about looking different is so distressing?Evolutionary biologists have an explanation. It's about survival. Here's an example using animals:
Animals, including humans, evolved to fear anything that's different from their kind.Without this fear, there'd be no instinct to run, hide, guard or fight.Let's say a herd of zebra is grazing. One of them becomes aware that,up atop the nearby hill, stands a lion.
The lion looks quite different from the zebras. The instinctive fear with a creature that looks different from them kicks in.Because of this fear, the zebras watch the lion, thereby preventing the lion from stalking them without being seen. However, the lion moves closer. This time, the zebras start running. They have a chance of escaping.
But suppose fear of that which looks different didn't exist. The zebras continue grazing, never minding the lion atop the hill. This allows the lion to move in either undetected or ignored, and it ends up getting an easy meal.Humans evolved this same instinctive aversion to anything that looks different from them.
However, the evolution of this, somewhere along the way, went overboard. Not only do most humans have an innate aversion or fear of wild animals, but this aversion exists within their own species!
This is why,say evolutionary biologists, racism is so prevalent. The inborn drive to stick with those who look just like you takes over, and the primitive response of distancing one's self from that which looks different, often overrides reasoning and logic.
This inborn aversion to people who look different from you, explains why in many cases,a very tall teen girl will feel uneasy amongst a group of little five-footers.
But conversely,if one of those five-footers were amongst a group of 5-10 teen girls, you can bet she'd feel a little uncomfortable or envious.
Our innate aversion towards those who look different from us has over-evolved.

You're looking different from other pupils...
