For Aristotle,virtue is about developing habits and states of characterthat will lead one to naturally choose what is good and right.Morality isabout growth,about the person's developing his or her capacities and exercisingthem to the fullest extent in order to realize what is best in them.Aristotle's ethics is thus about nurturance,the nurturance necessary to help aperson become a well-balanced,temperate,fully actualized human being.Thismoral nurturance and education begins with the family,without which moralityis doomed to failure.It must he carried on,however,by the continualnurturance of the larger community.That is why the Politics is but anextension of the Nichomachean Ethics.What this sustained care produces,whenit succeeds,is human excellence (Greek arete).Aristotle's ethics is thereforeteleological,focused on growth,and absolutely dependent on the nurturingactivity of the entire community.Our moral relations toward our fellowcitizens ought to be nurturant and ought to aim for the realization of humanwell-being and excellence.
