Among all advice columns out there,Dear Abby is probably the most widely read one.
But who is Abby?
Abby is short for Abigail,as in Abigail Van Buren.Under that pen name,Pauline Phillips started the column in 1956.Pauline,who was born on July 4,1918 in Iowa,began her career in journalism in 1955.She noticed the advice column in the San Francisco Chronicle; she called the editor and told him she could write a better one.And that she was the beginning to the popular long-running column known as Dear Abby.It attracted readers with sound advice and gentle feedback.
Pauline wrote the column herself until 2000,when her daughter Jeanne Phillips began writing the column with her.
In August 2002,Jeanne began to write the columns on her own because her mother had Alzheimer's Disease.Pauline died on January 16,2013; she was 94.
Over the years,Dear Abby has appeared in some 1400 newspapers worldwide.Today,it has a daily readership of more than 110 million.Loyal fans wouldn't dream of starting each day without the column.They love to share a laugh,shed a tear or learn something new every day with one of their dearest friend - Dear Abby.
