Many forms of adaptation already exist in communication systems to address various problems that might arise in these scenarios.Most notable is the wireless link-layer adaptation for wireless communications to improve throughput.Our transcoding solution can be considered the adaptation in the application layer.As we shall discuss later,this transcoding is needed for video applications to respond to changing throughput caused by link-layar adaptation,and to bridge other forms of diversity.there are many reasons media adaptation is necessary.First,the diversity of network types that IMS supports requires malleable media content to fit network pipes of different bandwidth.second,the common use of portable terminals requires compalibility with the drastically different processing power and display screen sizes.Third,the existence of a large number of video compression standards and the lack of a common baseline standard mean terminals might support mutually incompatible video formats.Media adaptation is a technique that addresses these differences.Transcoding techniques for these conventional purposes are important and well researched.In addition to differences that require media adaptation,mobile applications also present three unique challenges.Mobile applications require increasing interactivity between the service provider and the end user .Mobile communication mostly occurs through error-prone and lossy channels.Mobile terminals often have power constraints.In this article,we discuss how the same transcoder can,with dynamic feedback,achieve the conventional media adaptation goals as well as address these three important mobile communication challenges.
