有一次,那时,有某种东西

我又仔细的想了一下,之所以作者用something,就是因为这是他自己无法确定这种感觉,你没看他结尾一个劲用问号吗?因为大家都不叫他看,可以把大家理解成世俗的一些陈旧的观念,他自己的本意是想打破陈规的,但是有似乎不想直说,而等着读者自己最终下结论.但作者渴望的回答一定是.不用说了吧

同意popcorn0421的一些看法，但是他在翻译的时候还是选择了直译，即便他做出了解释，也看不出来，体味不到！
其实作者确实经历了一番，才有所体会的。知道了和别人说的不一样。所以她说言的 something，其实是心理面的真实体会，确有所言。
只是作为诗歌，把这个留给了读者，“一千个读者眼里就有一千个Hamlet”。所以作者用了 What was that whiteness?
Truth? A pebble of quartz? 这几个文句来反复强调 something的性质。来指代同一性质的something.
而且从then所处的语境来看，虽然可以翻译成那个时候，但是then 同样可以做为一种因果连接。就是因为那次(for once)，所以才有了something，得到了真实体会。
我本来想处理成 “若是，便是，它”。同样，“它”也是泛指同类性质的，能很好对应something。
