At first, it looked like everything would be fine because his sponsors were sticking by his side saying they would forgive him, and the Olympics Committee said he did not break their rules because he didn't fail a drug-doping test.
Days later it started to all fall apart. On Thursday, Kellogg's announced they would not renew Phelps' contract because he was not upholding the image Kellogg's wants to portray. Since when did cereal have an image to start with?
Next, USA Swimming suspended Phelps for three months. What does this accomplish? Nothing really. I think it was to please those around the country who are mad at Phelps for not upholding his role model duty. Also, it was USA's way of putting the message out there that they won't accept that type of activity. Phelps got pretty lucky that the photo from last November did not get exposed any later than now, though, because the world championships are in July.
This may sound bad, but I really do not think this is as big of a deal as the press is making it out to be. Yes, I understand that Phelps is one of the biggest role models right now because of his squeaky clean image and because of what he accomplished in the Olympics last summer. But he is human at the same time.
I am not condoning smoking marijuana by any means, but he is a 23-year-old guy who let loose at a party. It is a good opportunity for parents around the country to talk to their kids about drugs and forces the issue to be brought up.
it is my medical opinion that Phelps chugs drugs like no other. It is clear that the tests have came in negative due to 'blocked door syndrome',meaning that he has so many different types of drugs in his system, the tests are confused as to what should be returned positive and what should be negative. Easy right? In fact, you will see me at the next olympics, doing a Phelps..
It's tough to come down from virtually being deified at the Olympics, but Phelps’ situation points out plenty of things to consider as we examine our laws and strategies for dealing with drugs and alcohol.
“Studies show that young people's, especially male's, brains are hardwired for bad choices, and being under the influence of anything - legal or illegal - leaves you open to making bad decisions about everything,” said Calvina Fay, Executive Director of Drug Free America Foundation, Inc.
