The passage talks about some benefits which salvage logging that could deal with disasters by forest fires brought to us. However, the speaker in the lecture refutes the idea that salvage logging seems not having those benefits.
First of all, the reading made the point that by removing the remain of dead trees though salvage logging; it could be helpful for forest areas to recover from the disaster. The speaker, in contract, held a absolutely different view that it is not necessary to remove the remain of dead trees. First, new trees themselves could growth in the areas. In addition, when removing the remains, in the soil some nutrition which benefit to the growth of new tree are also removed.
Another important point that the passage has stated is that salvage logging could help decrease the dangers of insect infestation. On the contract, the listening presents a conflicting opinion that though insect infestation do harm for the health of forests, some other good animals like birds will could not survive in the habitat, if the trees are removed.
Finally, the speaker argues against the view in the passage that there are economic benefits brought by salvage logging by saying that the economic benefits are so small, which is based on the following two aspects. Firstly, it will take considerable long time to gain a few economic benefits. What's more, the salvage logging will need many manpower which will cost more than before.
