She was born on June 27,1880.For the first nineteen months of life she was a pretty,happy baby,normal in any way.But then a sudden illness destroyed her sight and hearing.And for she could not hear sounds and voices,she could not speak either.
Helen Keller used to say that her real birthday was March 3,1887--- the day when Anne Sullivan entered her life ---- instead of June 27,1880.Miss Sullivan was from a schoolfor the blind.A close teacher-pupil relationship began to grow between Helen and Miss Sullivan,and it was broken only when Miss Sullivan died 50years later.
Miss Sullivan started by teaching Helen to spell certain words by a special system.She would tap the letters into Helen's hand,then place in her hand the article that described Once the little girl understood that everyting had a name,she made remarkable progress.Within a few weeks,Helen got to know the meanings of more than a hundred words and learned new ones every day.She was not satisfied with this,however,she was determined to learn to talk.In the end,with Miss Sullivan's patient,she did this,although many sounds were difficulf for her to pronounce ,and her voice was not as clear and colourful as the normal.
