两个词相比,survive用的频率较高.survive from多用在表达沿革的意思的时候,例如：This tradition is survived from the Oing times.这个传统是从清朝时沿袭下来的.
我本人的经验是：表示存活、活下来、幸免于难的时候,用survive；表示习惯、仪式、礼仪、习俗等的沿革、沿袭、因袭的时候,多用survive from.
其实你说的，两个都可以，只不过是汉语思维。老英老美都不加介词的。
