Properties of acids and bases
Acids are corrosive（腐蚀性的） chemicals with a sour taste. All acids have certain chemical characteristics（特性） in common:
1、 They form solutions with a pH<7, so that indicators（指示剂） which change colour at about this pH give the same reaction with all acids, e.g. they turn blue litmus（石蕊） red.
2、 They react with reactive metals（活性金属） to give a salt and hydrogen（氢）.
3、 They react with bases, such as metal oxides（氧化物） and hydroxides/hai'drɔksaid/（氢氧化物） to form a salt and water.
4、 They react with metal carbonates（碳酸盐） and hydrogencarbonates（碳酸氢盐） to give a salt, water and carbon dioxide, which appears as effervescence（冒泡） (i.e. bubble appears).混淆
The most common bases are the oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of metals, but a number of other compounds（混合物）, such as ammonia 氨and amines胺 also act as（担当） bases. Solutions of bases, known as alkalis（可溶性的碱）, have a slippery（光滑的） feel and a bitter（苦的） taste (though, again, you should not taste them). As with acids all bases have certain chemical reactions in common:
1、 If they are soluble（可溶的） in water they give a solution with pH>7, so that they will all have a similar effect on indicators that change colour at about this pH, e.g. they turn red litmus blue.
2、 They react with acids to form a salt, e.g. calcium oxide（氧化钙） will react with hydrochloric acid（盐酸）to form calcium chloride（氯化钙） and water.
