Sparkle-cutting is one of the Miao’s clan sacrifice activities.Different clans do the sacrifice at different time,either on August,28th or September 29th of the lunar calendar.When sacrificing,all members of the clan gather up,each family tying strings of couch grass and red lines to a young tree.In the morning,when the sun rises,all the people gather together,surrounded by the host’s red line.The host then reads some sacrifice incantation,representing the struggle against the goddess who brings disasters,and cuts the young tree which stands for the goddess.A certain person shots the arrow to the air,meaning that the disasters go away and all the clan members will live peacefully.That’s the end of the activity.
