Cross Cultural Conceptualisations of Successful and Healthy Ageing
Related concepts such as healthy,successful,productive,active and positive ageing have been used to describe and study the ageing process.Governments globally have been particularly interested in p romoting health and aged care policies designed to achieve these concep ts.The reasons for this interest are twofold.One of the roles of government is to provide an economic and social environment that p romotes positive outcomes for citizens including older citizens.Secondly,p romoting healthy ageing potentially is a way of reducing the costs associated with ageing populations.Older people generally require more health services and these need to be funded.
In conclusion there are relatively few studies that examine cultural concep tualisations of successful and healthy ageing from the perspective of the older person themselves.Studies of older Chinese peop le have relied on concep tualisations of successful ageing developed inWestern cultures.Based on our review of successful ageing and related concep tswe are currently undertaking a p rogram of research in China and Australia to examine cultural concep tualisations of successful and healthy ageing in Anglo Australians,ChineseAustralians and Chinese that addresses the identified gap s in the literature.The aims of the study are:
1.To study the concep tualisations of healthy and successful ageing in Anglo Australians and Chinese peop le living in China and Australia.2.To study the impact of concep tualisations of healthy and successful ageing in Australia and China on health behaviours and use of health services.
