一、这里加了when,是没有区别的.如果动词是被动也一样.不过要是When 后面再有主语就不一样了,比如：When he heard the exciting news,he...而没有when的话,前半句是不能写成he heard...的,因为这就变成了一个逗号隔开两个完整的句子的情况,这是不对的.
二、rather than其实不是很死板的一定是加do,而是看前面动词的形式,如果前面是to do,它后面也是to do；如果前面是do/done/doing,后面也是do/done/doing；就是说,前面是什么形式,后面也是什么形式.
这句等于 when he was hearing the exciting news, he cried rather than smiled, 因为主句和从句的主语要保持一致，所以前面那个可以省略了
如果动作是被动的话 就表示是消息被听 主语应该是消息 不是他了
应该是 Heart the exciting news 后面就不能接这样了 应该是说消息怎么样了 因为前后主语要...
