非谓语动词是指在句子中不是谓语的动词，主要包括不定式、动名词和分词（现在分词和过去分词），即动词的非谓语形式。非谓语动词除了不能独立作谓语外，可以承担句子的其他成分。

以楼下回答者举得例子为例，The man standing over here is Mary's father,他真正的谓语是后面的is.因为一个句子中不能出现两个谓语，我们把这个句子拆开，the man stands over there ,谓语是shands,那么下一句话是，The man is Mary's father,is 是第二句的谓语，所以综合起来，这句话是要说站在这的那个男人是玛丽的爸爸，站在这儿是修饰作用，所以可以用非谓语，而真正要说的目的是说这个男的是玛丽爸爸
