Watergate scandal(水门事件)
The Watergate scandal was a political scandal during the 1970s in the United States resulting from the break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington,D.C.,and the Nixon administration's attempted cover-up of its involvement.Effects of the scandal eventually led to the resignation of Richard Nixon,the President of the United States,on August 9,1974; this has been the only resignation of a U.S.President.The scandal also resulted in the indictment,trial,conviction and incarceration of several top Nixon administration officials.
The affair began with the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate complex on June 17,1972.The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) connected the payments to the burglars to a slush fund used by the Committee for the Re-Election of the President,a fundraising group for the Nixon campaign.[1][2] As evidence mounted against the president's staff,which included former staff members testifying against them in an investigation conducted by the Senate Watergate Committee,it was revealed that President Nixon had a tape recording system in his offices and that he had recorded many conversations.[3][4] Recordings from these tapes implicated the president,revealing that he had attempted to cover up the break-in.[2][5] After a series of court battles,the U.S.Supreme Court ruled that the president had to hand over the tapes to government investigators; he ultimately complied.
Facing near-certain impeachment in the House of Representatives and a strong possibility of a conviction in the Senate,Nixon resigned the presidency on August 9,1974.[6][7] His successor,Gerald Ford,then issued a pardon to President Nixon

The Lewinsky scandal was a political sex scandal emerging in 1998 from a sexual relationship between United States President Bill Clinton and a 22-year-old White House intern,Monica Lewinsky.The news of this extra-marital affair and the resulting investigation eventually led to the impeachment of President Clinton in 1998 by the U.S.House of Representatives and his subsequent acquittal on all impeachment charges of perjury and obstruction of justice in a 21-day Senate trial.[1]
In 1995,Monica Lewinsky,a graduate of Lewis & Clark College,was hired to work as an intern at the White House during Clinton's first term,and began a personal relationship with him,the details of which she later confided to her friend and Defense department co-worker Linda Tripp,who secretly recorded their telephone conversations.[2] When Tripp discovered in January 1998 that Lewinsky had signed an affidavit in the Paula Jones case denying a relationship with Clinton,she delivered the tapes to Kenneth Starr,the Independent Counsel who was investigating Clinton on other matters,including the Whitewater scandal,the White House FBI files controversy,and the White House travel office controversy.During the grand jury testimony Clinton's responses were guarded,and he argued,"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is".[3]
The wide reporting of the scandal led to criticism of the press for over-coverage.[4][5][6] The scandal is sometimes referred to as "Monicagate",[7] "Lewinskygate",[8] "Tailgate",[9] "Sexgate",[10] and "Zippergate",[10] following the "gate" nickname construction that has been popular since the Watergate scandal.
