A new machining-dimension-based locating scheme is devel- oped as a systematic analysis and design procedure.Firstly,based on the kinematics of the rigid body motion,machining-dimension requirements are related with the DOFs of the workpiece to be constrained.Second,with known locator number and positions,the homogeneous linear system describing the constrained DOFs is formulated.Finally,based on the consistence analysis of both formulations,quantitative judgment criteria are concluded to cap- ture the relationship between the theoretical constrained DOFs and the practical constrained DOFs.The analysis is able to verify the locating correctness and to figure out the cause of locating incorrectness.The novel approach is useful not only to enrich the fixture design theory from experimental description to quantitative formulation but also to provide a practical tool for the develop- ment of computer aided fixture design CAFD system.
