植物群以禾本科、豆科和莎草科占优势,其中丛生禾草针茅属最为典型.此外,菊科、藜科和其他杂类草也占有重要地位.草原群落外貌呈暗绿色,植物体高度不大,生活型以地面芽植物为主.普遍具有旱生结构,如叶面积缩小,叶片内卷,气孔下陷等；植物的地下部分发达,其郁闭程度常超过地上部分.多数植物根系分布较浅,集中在0～30厘米的土层中.草原植物群具有明显的季相变化.建群植物生长、发育的盛季在六、七月份,不少植物的发育节律,随降水情况发生变异.以营养繁殖为主.草原植物群分为草甸草原、典型草原（干草原）和荒漠草原.
