句一中,后面的部分用来限定“the place",即是它的定语.用那个先行词,要看该先行词在定句中的成分,these herbs grew句子成分完整,the place 在句中表地点是定语,填 where
句二中,完整的是he had visited the city ,先行词在定句中是visited的宾语,是不可缺的否则句子不完整,句意不通.填that ,此类作宾语的先行词也可省略
第一个是where ,后面的句子需要地点状语。第二个句子用that，后面的句子需要宾语。
定语从句
定语从句是修饰名词或代词的从句叫定语从句，被定语从句所修饰的名词或代词叫先行词。
（1）由That引导，（指人或物），先行词是人或物
（2）由Who引导（指人）先行词是人
（3）由Which引导（指物）先行词是物

特殊情况：引导词只能用That而不能其他
《1》被序数词或者是最高级修饰的先行词后边，只能用That.用“《》”的说明只能用这个词
例：This is the most interesing story 《 that》 I have ever read.
例：Xiao Ming（小明）is the first forginer 《that》I have known.
《2》先行词是不定代词的必须用That
（2）定语从句中的胃语动词形式要与先行词的人称和数保持一致。（这里所说的数是单数或复数形式要与第几人称一致）
