1、except:指从所提一的人或事物中除去,即从整体中除去一部分.(不包括在内)
例：We all passed the exam except Tom. 除TOM外,我们都及格了.（指TOM不包括在及格人之内,TOM没有及格.）
2、but与except意义相同,但其语气较except弱,常与不定代词和疑问代词连用.
例：His failure was a surprise to no one but himself.除了他自己以外,没有人对他的失败感到意外.

注：当except位于句首的时候,后面通常加上for.
例：Except for this,everything is in a good order.=Everything is in good order except this.
