1603年,当时英格兰和苏格兰拥有了同一位国王,在英格兰的名叫詹姆士一世,在苏格兰的名叫詹姆士六世.
1606年4月12日制定的国旗,是由英格兰的圣乔治十字旗和苏格兰的圣安德鲁旗交叉合并而成,但和现在的有点不一样,没有红色的斜杠（所谓的圣帕特里克十字）.
1801年,当时爱尔兰加入大不列颠,成为联合王国,爱尔兰圣帕特里克的白底红色交叉型旗再度与米字旗合并,从而形成了今天的米字旗.

The flag which was introduced on April 12th,1606 was a combination of the St.George's Cross of England and the St.Andrew's Cross of Scotland.It differs from the flag of today in that it does not have the red saltire (known as the St.Patrick's Cross).
In 1801,when Ireland became a part of Great Britain,forming the United Kingdom,the red saltire and white base St.Patrick's Cross of Ireland was emerged into the British flag,thus becoming the British Union flag that we see today.
