The need to create greater awareness among people,especially youth,on the deleterious effects of drug abuse was stressed by speakers at a function organised to mark International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Monday.
They said that the younger generation should take a vow not to succumb to the evil of drugs.Inaugurating an exhibition organised by the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau of the State Police CID at the SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School,Annanagar Western Extension,Tamil Nadu Director-General of Police D.Mukherjee said that the development of the mind and the body was essential.Physical development would be affected if one consumed narcotic drugs.
Additional Director-General of Police,Crime,Narinderpal Singh,said drugs played havoc with the economic and social fabric of the nation.
Superintendent of Police,NIB CID,K.Arumugam,spoke about how drug addiction destroyed the lives of youngsters.
Uma Ganapathy Sastri and S.Rajendran,Deputy Inspectors-General of Police,were among those who attended the function
At the exhibition,photographs and samples of narcotic drugs were displayed as part of the efforts to create public awareness.The modus operandi adopted by drug smugglers was also highlighted.
