The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous buildings in the world.It is considered to be one of the most well-know images of the modern world although the building has been open for only about 30 years.The Sydney Opera House is as representative of Australia as the pyramids are of Egypt.
6 225 square meters of glass and 645 kilometers of electric cable were used to build the Opera House.It includes 1 000 rooms.It is 185 meters long and 120 meters wide.The building’s roof sections weigh about 15 tons.There are 1 million tiles on the roof.It provides guided tours to 200 000 people each year.
In the late 1950s the Australian Government made sure an appeal fund to finance the construction of the Sydney Opera House,and conducted a competition for its design was chosen.Utzon spent a few years reworking the design and it was 1961 before he had solved the problem of how to build the distinguishing feature—the sails of the roof.The venture experienced cost blowouts.In 1966 the situation reached crisis point and Utzon resigned from the project.The building was finally competed by others in 1973.Sydney Opera House was opened by Queen Elizabeth on 20th October 1973.
The Opera House reaches out into the harbour.Seen from the air or a ferry,the skyline of the Sydney Opera Hose,the blue water of the harbour and the Sydney Harbour Bridge,is beautiful.

悉尼歌剧院的外观及结构
悉尼歌剧院的外观为三组巨大的壳片,耸立在一南北长186米、东西最宽处为97米的现浇钢筋混凝土结构的基座上。第一组壳片在地段西侧,四对壳片成串排列,三对朝北,一对朝南,内部是大音乐厅。第二组在地段东侧,与第一组大致平行,形式相同而规模略小,内部是歌剧厅。第三组在它们的西南方,规模最小,由两对壳片组成,里面是餐厅。其他房间都巧妙地布置在基座内。整个建筑群的入口在南端,有宽97米的大台阶。车辆入口和停车场设在大台阶下面。
歌剧院整个分为三个部分：歌剧厅、音乐厅和贝尼朗餐厅。歌剧厅、音乐厅及休息厅并排而立，建在巨型花岗岩石基座上，各由4块巍峨的大壳顶组成。这些“贝壳”依次排列，前三个一个盖着一个，面向海湾依抱，最后一个则背向海湾侍立，看上去很象是两组打开盖倒放着的蚌。高低不一的尖顶壳，外表用白格子釉磁铺盖，在阳光照映下，远远望去，既象竖立着的贝壳，又象两艘巨型白色帆船，飘扬在蔚蓝色的海面上，故有“船帆屋顶剧院”之称。那贝壳形尖屋顶，是由2194块每块重15.3吨的弯曲形混凝土预制件，用钢缆拉紧拼成的，外表覆盖着105万块白色或奶油色的瓷砖。
