prose表示散文
essay表示随笔
我一直以为随便写的小文叫essay,上学的时候交给外教的一些作文也被叫作essay,再看看下面这段说明哈：
最早将essay一词引入中国的要算刘半农,而鲁迅翻译厨川白村《出了象牙之塔》时则对essay一词说得比较清楚.什么叫essay呢?鲁迅翻译说：“如果是冬天,便坐在暖炉旁边的安乐椅子上,倘在夏天,便披浴衣,啜苦茶,随随便便,和好友任心闲话,将这些话照样移在纸上的东西,就是essay.”这里,essay主要指一种絮语散文,比较散漫、随意,靠随笔较近.郁达夫在《清新的小品文字》中说得更具体准确,他对essay的理解更近随笔,并将essay和小品文进行了细致比较和区分：“我总觉得西洋的essay里,往往还脱不了讲理的philosophizing的倾向,不失之太腻,就失之太幽默,没有东方人的小品那么的清丽.”由此可见,将essay一词译成小品文是草率的,也是不准确的.
随笔则是散文的一种
