Many useful things were traded. But people wanted pretty things, too. A farmer might trade milk for a piece of beautiful cloth.
Even today we trade with one another. When you buy candy, do you pay for it with bear fat? Of course not! You use money. But you are still trading. You are still giving one thing for another.
