Because history is easy if you actually try to understand it based around cause and effect. Otherwise, you're just trying to memorize dates and names, which is simply not going to work... You're going to have to understand it to learn it... And it's proven that the easiest way to understand history is by analyzing it with cause and effect. Then you think of it as this happened in this year, and then 7 years later this happened... And then you end up memorizing a handful of dates, and significant events in terms of how many years, etc. after it something else significant happened.

Instead of just reading your history book, promote class discussions, or get study groups to actually discuss what you read. Talking about it is a GREAT way to understand it and really get a feel of what happened.
